McTimoney Chiropractic for Children

Why might my child need Chiropractic?
The aches and pains many adults experience often have their origins in childhood events. Sometimes these begin with the birth process which can place stress on the body due to a difficult or assisted delivery. As a result, the body begins to develop unhealthy patterns which may not resolve on their own. From the toddler stage onwards, children experience the rough and tumble of play and sport, poor posture, carrying heavy school bags and so on. All these events can begin to affect the child’s structure at the time when their bone, muscles and joints are not fully developed.McTimoney Chiropractic is based on the philosophy that misalignments in the joints and skeletal structure can result in interference to the nervous system. Relieving pressure on the nerve supply can allow the body to heal itself. Structural difficulties can cause problems not only to joints and muscles but to our internal organs too by affecting the way they work. Good joint function is vital to the good health and wellbeing of the child and it is wonderful if problems can be identified and treated early.
How can McTimoney Chiropractic help my child?
Many adults are not aware that children can be experiencing genuine pain which may be helped by chiropractic. Sadly children’s symptoms are often dismissed or confused with wishing to avoid school because children are seen as too young to have any muscle tension aches and pains. Unfortunately the pain is often real and can affect both play and school. Chiropractic can help many childhood ailments. It can also be very effective in the treatment of sports and other injuries.
At what age can my child begin treatment?
I regularly treat children from aged two onwards, many of their mothers having been treated during pregnancy too. It is not unusual for problems such as scoliosis to develop during adolescent growth spurts and it is important that these are identified early so that they can be treated. It is well worth having your child checked even if there are few symptoms present as postural and structural problems early on may be relatively painless but can lead to more painful symptoms in later life.
Treatment – what can I expect?
McTimoney Chiropractic use a hands-on manipulative technique to adjust the joints of the entire body. At your child’s first session I will carry out a detailed assessment of their medical history and symptoms including orthopaedic and neurological testing as appropriate. If I suspect any condition requires medical treatment or if x rays or scans are needed, I will ask you to consult your GP. Usually we can begin your child’s treatment immediately. You will always need to be present at your child’s first treatment and for follow ups unless they are a mature teenager.
How will my child feel after treatment?
Hopefully you will soon notice some beneficial results. However, during a course of chiropractic treatment your child can expect to feel physical changes as their body realigns. These may include stiffness or tiredness particularly after the first session. Younger children may temporarily seem a little unsettled too.
McTimoney Chiropractic is suitable for people of all ages. It is a wonderful treatment during and after pregnancy and for children and teenagers too. Developed by John McTimoney over 30 years ago, it is widely recognised as being a gentle, precise, whole body technique designed to treat the whole person and not only the symptoms. McTimoney Chiropractors are trained to correct misalignments using quick, gentle and accurate adjustments.
Usually children respond quickly to treatment and many enjoy it and look forward to their checkups. Teenagers enjoy coming along independently while young children think of it as game and often ask their parents to book. They seem to know when they need realigning better than we do!
I have treated many children for:
Headaches
Persistent limping
Neck tension
Coordination and balance problems
Aches and pains from accidents
Sports injuries.
It is important to understand that health is not only the absence of pain but also means being in balance so we can meet challenges more effectively.
I am a McTimoney Chiropractor with 16 years experience in my own practice treating children and adults. I am state (GCC) registered and also qualified in sports and therapeutic massage and provision of orthotics. Please look at my website to find out more interesting information.
