Reiki
Reiki is an ancient and profoundly simple system of ‘laying on of hands’ healing derived from Tibetan Buddhism which was re-discovered in the nineteenth century by Mikao Usui, a professor of Christian Theology in Kyoto, Japan. Reiki is not affiliated to any religion and you do not have to be a ‘believer’ to benefit.
The act of laying hands on the human or animal body to comfort and relieve pain is as old as instinct. When experiencing pain, the first thing most people do is to put their hands on it. Human touch conveys warmth, serenity and healing. It also conveys caring and love. This simple act is the basis for all touch-healing techniques.
The living body radiates warmth and energy. This energy is the life force itself and can be activated for the purpose of healing, it has as many names as there are human civilizations: Chi, Prana, Barraka, to name but a few. In Japan the energy is termed Ki and it is from this word that Reiki is named: Rei - Universal Ki - Energy. This vital healing energy is channelled to where the recipient most needs it, releasing blocked energy and working to create a state of equilibrium that is fundamental to healthy living Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) offers a pleasant way for a person in good health to relax, to relieve stress and to increase energy and vitality. Reiki may also be used to facilitate the healing of illness and help the individual return to a state of balance and wholeness. The whole body is treated, even if the pain or illness is localised, so that the energy can go to the cause of the imbalance, not just the manifesting symptoms. Reiki will encourage healing on all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
During a typical Reiki treatment, you would lie folly clothed on a padded massage couch in a warm, comfortable room while the practitioner places her hands lightly and systematically at various places along the body including the head, chest, abdomen, back, legs and feet. It is not uncommon for the client to fall asleep during the treatment.
